Warm Winter Activities

For an intrepid New Yorker who scoffs at snow, all four seasons, winter included, are part of what makes the city feel like home. As tempted as you are to bundle up in a blanket in the cozy confines of your 535W43 apartment, the world beyond beckons you with its exciting experiences and entertainment. Here are a few of our favorite indoor winter activities that combine food, drinks, and fun into a single evening in Midtown West: A Taste of Magic | (various locations) If you’ve ever found yourself suddenly bored in the time between finishing your beet salad appetizer and the arrival of your branzino entrée, then “A Taste of Magic” may be exactly what you’re looking for. Combining food and—you guessed it—magic for an evening of wonderment and culinary delight, shows are hosted weekly at various world-renowned New York restaurants, and ticket prices include a three-course pre-fixe menu, accompanied by a troupe of magicians performing tableside throughout the meal. All shows are family-friendly, so make it a night with either a date or the kids. And the troupe performs at both 5 and 8 pm, which means “A Taste of Magic” can be your entire evening out or just one particularly enjoyable part of it. Drunk Shakespeare | 300 West 43rd Street Are you a fan of “Drunk History”? The once “one-off” show has become so popular that A-list celebrities like Lin-Manuel Miranda (of Hamilton fame) are appearing not just in the sketches, but as inebriated yarn-tellers themselves. Well, if it works for history, then why not literature? Behold, The Drunk Shakespeare Society, comprising five professional actors who gather to perform the Bard’s masterworks for your viewing pleasure…but only after one of them has downed at least five shots of whiskey, while the sober cast members try, often to no avail, to keep the script on track. Set amongst 15,000 books in a hidden library, the show changes from night to night, depending upon who is drinking. For the over-21-only audience, drinks and snacks are available throughout the performance. Those looking for a courtlier view of the action can purchase the King’s/Queen’s seats for a premium price that includes thrones, a crown to wear, champagne, caviar, chocolates, and two signature cocktails. Lucky Strike Bowling | 624-660 West 42nd Street And if you’re looking for a more familiar activity but with a New York twist, Lucky Strike is your play. With 26 lanes, as well as live music from local DJs, billiards tables, plasma TVs showing the big game, and a grand choice of food and drinks, Lucky Strike puts other bowling alleys to shame. This is truly a destination with enough diversions to keep the party going until closing time. Challenge your friends in a match of 10-pin. See who the real pool shark is or cheer the Giants and Jets to victory against their rivals. With the flexibility of Lucky Strike’s hours, you can start or end your night here, but whatever you do, don’t forget to tuck in that shirt. Like we said, this is no run-of-the-mill bowling alley, and to take the experience up a notch, a dress code applies during the evening hours.
