Fall Happenings in Hell’s Kitchen

The autumnal equinox means cozy sweaters, spiced lattes, and the best season to be in NYC. You could stay inside your Midtown West apartment rental at 535W43 and cozy up in the private residents’ lounge by the nine-foot long fireplace or break a sweat with a pre-holiday-season workout in the yoga and cycling studios. But once the weather gets cooler, you’ll want to head out and get a healthy dose of crisp air and take in the offerings at the world-class cultural institutions and Fall-friendly activities steps from your new home. Fall Season at Alvin Ailey | 405 West 55th Street This fall, Alvin Ailey premieres a program inspired by the words spoken of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in what’s sure to be a powerful evening at “r-Evolution, Dream.” Award-winning choreographer and longtime Alvin Ailey member Hope Boykin combines storytelling with the speeches and sermons of Dr. King set to music by drummer Ali Jackson and recorded by Tony Award-winner Leslie Odom, Jr. of the Broadway sensation Hamilton. Also slated for the Fall at Alvin Ailey is MacArthur “Genius grant” recipient Kyle Abraham’s performance of “Untitled America”, which explores the effects of the American carceral state on black families. Vogue has describes Abraham’s contribution to Ailey as bringing an “original and politically minded downtown sensibility” that is “as much Merce and Martha as it is Eadweard Muybridge and Michael Jackson.”   Bear Mountain Cruise | Saturdays and Sundays | Pier 83 Set out on an autumnal adventure with the Circle Line Cruises’ Bear Mountain Cruise, which takes you up the Hudson River to Bear Mountain State Park. The cruise features amazing views along the way including Grant’s Tomb and the Little Red Lighthouse in Fort Washington Park — all through the brightly-hued leaves. The cruise also offers an authentic Oktoberfest experience onboard replete with German Oompah Band, delicacies like bratwurst, pork schnitzel and Bavarian pretzels, as well as specials on Warsteiner beers. Once you arrive at Bear Mountain Park, you’ll have three hours to explore over 50 miles of trails with a hike, paddle board, or brunch at the Bear Mountain Inn before getting back to your cozy Hell’s Kitchen rental.   Intrepid Air and Space Museum | Pier 86 Fall’s crisp weather and cloudless skies were made for star gazing: Break out the telescope and head to former warship the Intrepid, a museum dedicated to the history of the United States military, navy, and space program on Astro Cafe nights, which transforms into a live planetarium during its astronomy-focused events for adults and families. With its Astro Cafe lecture series, the museum brings experts in astrophysics and planetary science to discuss the latest cutting-edge findings in their fields. At the next lecture on October 7, you can listen to Dr. Shaw Phillips, the director of the Rocket Lab at the Air Force Research Lab discuss the organization’s “Rocket Lab” while you enjoy drinks aboard the ship. After the discussion, you’ll be able to stargaze with the Amatuer Astronomer’s Association on the flightdeck. While the Astro Cafe is limited to adults over 21, you can bring the kids to Family Astronomy Night on October 28th, where rocket scientist Summer Ash will discuss radio telescopes, followed by more on deck stargazing. And afterwards, finish your evening downstairs in 535W43’s game room and reminisce on your adventurous day.   Image Courtesy of ©iStock.com/Olga_Gavrilova
